Hertfordshire Constabulary launched its firearms amnesty today.

The two-week campaign is an opportunity for people to hand over firearms and ammunition anonymously to the police without fear of prosecution for firearms licensing offences.

A number of firearms were surrendered prior to the amnesty, which runs until November 21.

Police said changes made to the firearms laws in July could mean that some gun owners may unknowingly be in possession of an illegal firearm.

The changes also mean anyone who has received a prison sentence, even a suspended one, may be prohibited from owning a firearm.

Those who have previously received custodial sentences of between three months and three years are prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition for five years following release, whilst those who have served longer sentences are permanently prohibited.

People with firearms they either do not want, should not have or would like to discuss the procedure for getting a certificate for, should contact the police on 01707 806126.

Officers will then arrange to come and collect the weapon, or advise you on how to apply for the required certificate.

Alternatively firearms can be brought to Watford police station and surrendered during the amnesty.
