Diwali celebrations will take place in Watford this weekend as part of the Borough Council’s Big Events series.

Along The Parade Mehndi, Gopi dot face painting, musical and cultural dance workshops will be offered for free throughout the event on November 16.

There will also be performances from various regions across India, including Kathak and Bollywood dancing, as well as singing and spoken word.

Visitors can take a break from the action by visiting the Diwali Market, where they can purchase food, crafts, clothing and gifts.

As darkness hits, the Festival of Light celebration will take to form of a procession along The Parade to the pond, which will be alight with floating lotuses.

Cyclists carrying peacock lanterns and a two-metre illuminated Ganesha will lead the way, with members of the public holding candles.

Elected Mayor Dorothy Thornhill said: "Watford is proud of its diversity and I’m delighted that we are celebrating it with this very special Diwali event. The day offers a chance for people of all ages to have fun, learn and be part of the community."

For those who want the festivities to continue, Watford Palace Theatre is hosting a performance of Janak Dulari Sita: King Janak’s beloved daughter Sita in the evening.

The large cast will tell the tale through musical storytelling, elaborate choreography, animated backdrops and exquisite costume, offering a magical experience for all the family.

Narration is by Harish Bhimani with English subtitles. Tickets can be bought in advance from the Theatre.
