Pupils at Edge Grove School in Radlett paid their respects on Remembrance Day by opening a garden.

The garden is dedicated to past Edge Grove students who lost their lives in the war.

A historic memorial plaque was donated to the school to honour a local war veteran, Thomas William Childs, who died in action in September 1917.

The plaque, which has a special place in the garden, was one of several Holland-Hibbert plaques mounted on houses in Letchmore Heath, Battlers Green and Patchetts Green to commemorate those who fought and died in the First World War.

The new garden was opened to mark the centenary anniversary of the war. It will be used as an area for quiet reflection by staff and students at the school.

Edge Grove’s headteacher, Ben Evans, said: "We are very privileged to have fantastic grounds at Edge Grove which has made this development possible.

"Opening the Remembrance Garden is very much a testament to our commitment of the importance of outdoor learning for our pupils as well as a mark of our respect for those brave individuals who lost their lives in the line of duty."
