An introductory orienteering event is being held in Watford on Saturday, November 22.

Thames Valley Orienteering Club is organising the event at the Big Wood.

Participants are welcome to run, jog or walk the courses, which will be set up for all ages and abilities, including families, children and runners.

The orienteering race does not follow a set route, but consists of a series of checkpoints where participants register at each one with an electronic timing chip.

The checkpoints may be along paths, streams, earth banks or around the woods.

The event is also opportunity to explore the former golf course with its remnants of the former greens, bunkers and a bomb crater.

The introductory courses at Big Wood should take around 30 to 75 minutes to complete.

Mike Shires, Thames Valley Orienteering Club, said: "Orienteering really is a sport for all.

"Our events attract keen runners as well as families and children. It’s also a great opportunity for parents to have a run while the children tackle a junior course. Children love the buzz of finding the checkpoints and it’s a great healthy outdoor activity."

Help will also be available for newcomers. The cost is £5 for adults and groups, or £2 for juniors. Those interested should meet between 10am and 11.30am on the day.
