Residents are split over possible solutions to the parking problems around Cassiobury Park - but agree something needs to be done fast.

Improvement works at the park promise more visitors and more events, but residents of the surrounding triangle area say a proposed extension of parking restrictions is not the answer.

Residents of roads surrounding the park have been asked whether weekday parking restrictions should be extended to the weekend.

David McTernan, who lives in Swiss Avenue, said such a change would make it harder for residents and for people to visit the park.

He said: "The park is a great amenity. We need to come up with a solution that doesn’t stop people using it. Extending the weekday restrictions to include weekends would make it hard for visitors to the park as well as residents, and any friends and family that come to visit.

"There is definitely a problem, when the football is on. It can take 20 minutes to get to the end of the road.

"There is no easy solution, it will be a messy solution whatever happens. Possibly having restrictions on one side of the road to maintain traffic flow?"

Terry Sullivan, chairman of the Triangle Residents’ Association, said the situation is at its worst when the football fixture is at home, and events such as runs and cycle rides are held in the park.

The Cassiobury Park Avenue resident said: "In order for people to access the park without a large jam, some kind of restriction needs to come in.

"Extending restrictions is a solution, I’m not saying it’s the best solution, but it would be straightforward."

Park councillor Binita Mehta said: "Finding a solution for this needs to be further up the agenda. Councillors have now conducted a survey asking if the parking restrictions should be extended to weekends, but I don’t think this approach is helpful.

"We need a solution everyone can get behind."
