A woman from Rickmansworth has raised thousands of pounds after having her hair shaved off for charity.

Megan Holmes, of Chiltern Drive, had her hair shaved off on Friday to raise funds for the Michael Sobell Hospice, who cared for her grandmother before she lost her battle with cancer earlier this year.

The hair will be donated to the Little Princess Trust, which makes wigs for children who have lost their hair while receiving chemotherapy.

But the 24-year-old will be donating £4,000 to the hospice based in Mount Vernon Hospital, Northwood, after two months of fundraising and hopes the haircut will encourage people not to judge "a book by its cover".

Ms Holmes said: "My nan was like the Katherine Tate nan. She used to tell us to stand out and be different and not follow the crowd and try and make a difference in anything we feel strongly for.

"I am getting used to it [the haircut]. I went to Watford and an elderly lady came up to me and said she was very sorry and I had to explain that I was not sick."
