Watford is preparing to open its first ever outdoor ice rink this week to coincide with the run-up towards the festive season.

From Saturday until the beginning of December, the ice rink, located at the recently created events space at the top of The Parade, will be open to anyone who wants to put on a pair of skating shoes and take to the ice, no matter how good, or bad, you might be.

With the twinkling lights of the town’s 30ft tree reflected on the ice, the rink will transform the town centre into a magical winter wonderland. Local singers, musicians, bands and choirs will also be performing while the skaters glide and slide.

Elected Mayor Dorothy Thornhill says: “I don’t know what I’m more excited about, watching everyone out skating or the X Factor-style performances! I’m thrilled that Watford will have its own outdoor ice rink.

“People can skate, do their Christmas shopping and even treat themselves to dinner – we’ve got it all here.” The ice rink will be open daily, with the exception of Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, between 11am and 9pm, and anyone interested in having a skate around is advised to book their 45-minute session in advance.
