A worn down heritage telephone box outside Hunters Lodge in Hunton Bridge has been transformed into a library for the Abbots Langley community.
Three Rivers Councillor Chris Whately-Smith had been asking Abbots Langley Parish Council to bring forward the painting of the telephone box as it was beginning to look weather-beaten. Its restoration then led him to thinking what other uses the telephone box could be put to.
He said: "I had thought about a library of some sort and asked for ideas from the community. The replies I got were for just this, so I asked permission from the parish council, had an old bookcase donated and set up this self-perpetuating library. It has a map of the area, a small roll of remembrance for those fallen in the First World War, some history of Hunton bridge and the conservation area.
"Most importantly it has a selection of books for all ages which have been donated and added to. The idea being that you just bring in one you have read and take another. It's great to see it in use and being kept tidy."
