A woman with learning disabilities whose quality of life had broken down regained her own self-esteem and confidence with the help and support of a Kings Langley care charity.

Thanks to the help of Life Opportunities Trust, a charity based in Hempstead Road that supports people with disabilities, Leigh Mclachlan, 34, originally from Colchester, found independence and began enjoying her life.

Ms Mclachlan's previous care provision had always broken down as Leigh at times displayed behaviour that could sometimes challenge a service. However, two years ago Ms Mclachlan was introduced to Life Opportunities Trust through social services, after they became concerned about her safety.

Angela Tierney, the deputy chief executive, said: "When I first met Leigh it was clear she wasn't looking after herself at all.

"We did a full assessment, which was crucial to Leigh and for us to start to build up her own personalised care and support service.

"We believed in Leigh and our aim was to provide the right support which would help her meet her own wishes for the future and for her to be able to live as independently as possible."

Ms Mclachlan moved to Life Opportunities Trust's provision last February amd she now has her own flat in Garston, supported by a small team of three support workers.

She manages her own tenancy and has grown into a confident, relaxed and outgoing person, taking pride in her appearance. She has made new friends, is learning to read and write and also works part time as a receptionist for Life Opportunities Trust.

Ms Tierney added: "We've seen Leigh grow into someone who is confident and out-going and able to manager her own tenancy. Her challenging behaviour has dramatically reduced."

Ms Mclachlan said: "I am getting on fine now, I'm working behind the desk and answering the phone and I love everything I do here. I like the people around me and being here, I feel like I have friends. I can also go out to different places like Watford and Hemel Hempstead and I'm looking forward to seeing my mum at Christmas."
