The last bricks have been laid at a new community free school in Watford.

Construction of Ascot Road Community Free School got underway in April, and this week headteacher Helen Lockham, Elected Mayor of Watford Dorothy Thornhill and pupil Ali Hanif led the new school's topping out celebrations.

Watford Borough Council granted permission for the West Herts Community Free School Trust to build the school next to Morrisons in March.

It had been originally hoped that the school would be open for last September, however, the school's 60 new pupils started at the Lanchester building, on the West Herts College site.

The building is now due to be completed in May, and will accomodate this year's intake of pupils as well as new starts in September.

Susan Poole, spokesman for the school, said: "We will move there in May when the building is finished. It is now watertight.

"It's going to be great, there's lots of space inside, as well as an outdoor play area and we will have a private nursery on the site too.

"We are all very excited and looking forward to seeing our pupils in the building and meeting next year's new pupils."

The school is currently accepting applications for children starting in reception in 2015.
