A Christmas tree memorial to those killed in World War One featured in the first ever Christmas tree festival to be held by St Mary's Church.

More than 30 trees were on display last weekend as charities, schools and church groups joined in the festivities.

Shirley Stirling, one of the organisers, said: "It was the first Christmas tree festival we've held at the church, but it certainly won't be the last.

"We are hoping to make it an annual event and build on the opportunities it has afforded us to help those less fortunate."

She continued: "I think one of the most poignant trees was a memorial to the 114 young men connected to St Mary's who lost their lives during World War One.

"Festival organiser Judith Ballard decorated the tree with 114 red crosses as a tribute."
