Pupils at St Hilda's School in Bushey spent an afternoon re-enacting the World War One Christmas truce.

Children in years five and six had been studying Michael Foreman's War Games, an illustrated children's poetry book about the truce, in English.

They had also been studying the First World War in history.

As part of the centenary anniversary the teachers, led by humanities teacher Karen Peterman, at the school decided to fuse the lessons and create put on this event.

Helping her was PE teacher Averil Mackett and deputy head teacher Shirley Drummond.

The girls started the afternoon with a poetry reading. They then headed down to the lawn to re-enact the Christmas truce football match.

They were split into the Germans and the English, and it began with them singing a Silent Night in German, the English side responded with The First Noel.

Soon they were exchanging gifts and kicking a football about.

Ms Drummond said: "This is a great project to dedicate to the centenary anniversay of the war.

"The girls have really got involved in the lessons and one even said they like the fact that it brings together three subjects - English, History and PE."

Many of the girls were very excited about taking part in it.

One year five girl said: "It's exciting to see and experience what they went through, because were so sad, but when they got out there and played football, they felt like normal boys."

Another girl added: "Christmas true in World War One was all about sharing."
