Watford Grammar School for Girls has been chosen to host a special candle lighting ceremony for Holocaust Memorial Day next month.

A candle will be lit at Watford Grammar School for Girls in the Main Hall as part of a national initiative that sees 70 specially designed candles at the day's events across the UK, marking the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau on January 27.

Headgirl, Amy O’Shea, will light the candle during the commemoration on January 29 at 7pm, which will begin a moment of reflection honouring the survivors of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides.

The event will also involve readings from The Sketchbook From Auschwitz and appropriate music.

Watford Grammar School for Girls was chosen from hundreds of applications sent to the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, the charity responsible for marking Holocaust Memorial Day in the UK.

Event organiser, Dame Helen Hyde, said: "Holocaust Memorial Day is an important focal point in the year and we are delighted to have been selected to be part of this nationwide commemoration.

"It is vital that we remember and reflect upon the horrors of the past, and honour those who survived."

Those wishing to attend the event have been asked to contact the school.
