More than 300 parents have signed a petition to get a narrow footpath widened.

Parents from Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School and Bushey Academy, particularly those with pushchairs, are concerned about the narrowness of the pavement in London Road, which puts them off walking to school.

During the school run, the footpath gets congested and often results in people walking on the busy road.

Councillor Peter Taylor for Oxhey Ward and mum-to-be Lucy Bonner, who both have children that go to Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, are leading the campaign.

Mr Taylor said: "People are really concerned about safety.

"You can't fit a double buggy properly on that path and at the end of the day, because of the schools, there are kids about, walking on the road

"Its an accident waiting to happen."

Ms Bonner added: "I would like to walk and I think many parents would too, but, especially those with more than more child, prefer to drive because of the narrow footpath."

Emily Corrigan, 28, of Hayden Road, Bushey, walks her son to school every day.

Ms Corrigan, who also has baby twin girls that she carries around in a double pushchair, said: "My son stands on a buggy board and last week I was trying to move around the pole thats in the middle of the path and the buggy just tipped slightly and he fell into the road.

"It was just lucky that the traffic was being held up by a bus.

"Something needs to be done."

Headteacher of Sacred Heart School Carlyn Hatch said: "As a school we encourage our parents and children to walk or scooter to school to help ease parking congestion, but also to help them adopt a healthier lifestyle.

"In order to do this I support the path widening campaign, particularly as we share the road with Bushey Academy School. The safety of all the children needs to be considered."

County Councillor Seamus Quilty said: "The only way the county council would be able to do this would be to make the road narrower.

"To widen the footpath by cutting into the grass banks would be too expensive.

"Also, planning permission was recently granted for a new health centre to be built near there, so that will need be taken into consideration."

Terry Douris, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: "We have been informed that we will be receiving a petition calling for the widening of the pavement on London Road, Bushey, a scheme that is already being investigated by highways officers.

"We welcome residents’ views and if there are significant signatures the petitioner may, if they choose, present the petition to the Highways and Waste Management Panel."
