Tributes have been paid to former chairman and treasurer of the Watford Hospitals League of Friends of almost 20 years, Phil Hopkin, who died on December 23 aged 62.

The accountant joined the League of Friends as a volunteer in 1987 as a way of showing his appreciation for the care he received at Watford General Hospital during a period as a patient.

Three years later he became treasurer, and in 1994/5 succeeded Brenda Bullivant as chairman. He held both positions until 2013, when ill health forced him to stand down.

During his tenure, the league raised hundreds of thousands of pounds to buy equipment for the hospital through its Tea Shop and Tea Bar, supplemented in some years by a summer fair and Christmas raffle.

He was regarded as a driving force in the activities of the league, ensuring that every penny made as profit was ploughed back into the hospital.

Phil’s funeral will be held on Wednesday, January 7, at St James Church Bushey, followed by a service at Harrow Weald Cemetery and reception at Bushey Country Club Phil leaves a widow, Lesley-Anne, and two children.
