School pupils in Watford will mark Holocaust Memorial Day at an event hosted by Watford Synagogue.

Year nine to 13 students at Watford Grammar School for Boys, Watford Grammar School for Girls and West Herts College will hear testimony from a Holocaust survivor and participate in an educational workshop at the event on Monday, February 2.

This year’s commemorations are particularly poignant as January 27 will be the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp.

Eric Eugene Murangwa, a football-crazy survivor of the 1994 Rwandan genocide, in which an estimated 800,000 Tutsis were slaughtered by their Hutu countrymen, will also share his experiences during the day.

Eric’s story is set to demonstrate why racism, discrimination, persecution and intolerance should concern people of all faiths and races today.

Students will participate in an educational workshop relating historical facts about the Holocaust to contemporary issues.

Both sessions will conclude with closing reflections from Watford Synagogue’s Rabbi Ephraim Levine and the lighting of a memorial candle.
