Watford FC’s medical officer has backed a course to help overweight men in Hertfordshire maintain a healthier lifestyle.

Speaking about Shape Up, the new scheme commissioned by Hertfordshire County Council and created and delivered by Watford FC’s Community Sports and Education Trust.

Dr Ian Hamilton said: "We know that being overweight and a lack of physical fitness can contribute to a number of health issues, such as diabetes, cancer, heart problems, stroke and depression, so this course is an excellent way to start addressing these issues as part of a supportive group."

Participants on the male-only course must be aged 18 to 50, with a BMI of 30 or more, and residents of Hertfordshire.

Weekly courses will run from 7pm to 8.30pm at Oxhey Wood Primary School starting Wednesday, February 4, and at the Vicarage Road Stadium starting Thursday, February 5.

Watford FC’s CSE Trust’s head of education and health, Mark Smith, added: "We are happy to be working with Hertfordshire County Council on such a worthwhile project.

"This is a great opportunity for local men to make a positive start to 2015 by losing weight in an enjoyable environment."
