Students at Kings Langley Secondary School recently went to the University of Hertfordshire to take part in one of their "Pathfinder" days.

The Pathfinder Day is designed to provide visibility and awareness of one of the many opportunities available to students, and forms part of an outreach programme offered by the University in order to inform and inspire students.

It is offered in Year 9 as this is the start of students focusing on their option and possible career choices.

The day offered an excellent opportunity for students to take part in a number of activities designed to raise awareness of what Higher Education is about.

They worked in small teams on a variety of tasks with the support of a student ambassador currently studying at the University.

They heard about the many different and varied courses on offer at Universities throughout the country and how to finance their studies, as well as how to budget while studying.

Students were also given a taster lecture, which included a moral dilemma they were asked to debate. The day ended with groups being asked to produce a poster, a slogan and an object that could best describe what going to university is about, and then give a presentation to a judging panel.

Jan Wright, Information, Advice and Guidance Administrator, said: "The students worked really well, were productive, polite and well-mannered throughout.

"The staff and students from the university commented on how much they enjoyed working with the group, the genuine interest they showed, how impressed they were with the questions the students asked and answered and how well they worked together. It was a thoroughly useful and rewarding trip."
