Watford fans have responded to a letter from a season ticket holder who has threatened to report the club to the football authorities if it does not clamp down on supporters standing during games.

In a letter printed in the Watford Observer, Ken Connelly said his match-day experience in The Rookery is being “ruined” by fans that stand up throughout games at Vicarage Road and restrict his view.

He criticised intoxicated fans for their “foul and abusive language and intemperate posturing” in front of children in the bar areas.

And Mr Connelly also took aim at Watford for failing to take action against fans that stand up throughout the 90 minutes and threatened to report the club to the authorities if it did not act.

Watford fans took to social media to address the letter, which appeared exclusively in the paper-version of the Observer, yesterday.

Others have sent their own letters in to the Observer on the subject of standing at the game – with fans seemingly split on the matter.

Nick Wilson from St Albans penned a letter to the WO to point out that while every fan is required to have a seat, the law does not dictate that they must sit in it.

He added: “If Mr Connelly seeks to change anything, although why he doesn't just move I cannot understand, he would be better served in engaging in dialogue with the club rather than threatening to escalate to higher authorities.

“The very idea that he would seek to have the stand closed will do little to endear Mr Connelly in the minds of those he seeks to influence.

"At the moment, common sense prevails at the club and long may that continue.”

Nathan Horbury tweeted: “It it just me, or does sitting down just ruin the excitement of the game? And as for the 'foul and abusive language in the presence of children' bit, isn’t that what the family end is for?”

Jo Neill tweeted: “I'd rather Ken sat in the Rous or East Stand, there is room! People like Ken ruin MY match day experience.”

But Christopher Jones wrote to the WO in support of Mr Connelly.

He said: “The most annoying aspect of this is that there is absolutely no necessity to stand to see the match; but only a few dozen people can initiate a concertina effect that obliges everyone to follow suit.

“Ken is right when he says that the club makes no effort to enforce the regulations...sorry stewards, but your inaction in almost all circumstances is well-known to most long-standing supporters.

He said he had “given up any hope of curbing obscenities” before concluding his note by pleading for the club to “at least make an effort to ensure an enjoyable experience” for all supporters.

Former Three Rivers district councillor Kerron Cross hit back at fans abusing Mr Connelly on Twitter before saying: “Another example of the idea if you don't stand, shout songs and wave flags you're somehow not a 'real' fan.

“My problem is more those who stand throughout the game - not at kick off or goals etc - which stops kids/OAPs viewing.

“Whilst we shouldn't report Watford for allowing people to stand and swear at games, policies are there for good reason.”

The club has not yet responded to a request from the Observer for a statement.

Watford fans, what do you think? Will you stand at today's game against Blackpool?

Does Mr Connelly have a point – should fans be respectful to others around them and should the club clamp down on standing during the game?

Or should supporters have the right to stand up whenever they want?
