Pedestrians will be able to access Orphanage Road during the part reconstruction of the overbridge after the Watford MP stepped in to help residents.

Network Rail will carry out a major reconstruction of the bridge as part of its £80m upgrade of the rail network around Watford.

Orphanage Road was due to be completely closed around the clock to both motorists and pedestrians between February 2 and April 17.

Richard Harrington said he has spoken to rail bosses who have agreed to lift the pedestrian ban in the evenings until February 23, with the Watford MP hopeful the firm will still go further.

He said: “I completely understand that Network Rail need to ensure the safety of everyone as they undertake these works.

“They are reconstructing the concrete section of the underbridge so these are essential and significant works.

“That said, the complete closure of the road, including to pedestrians, for such a long period, would undoubtedly cause some serious inconvenience for many residents.

“This is a busy footpath and with the agreement that the site would be safe and secure, I asked Network Rail to look again at what they could do to limit any effect on residents.”
