A training session to spot the signs of someone being drawn into terrorism was held by Hertsmere Borough Council last week.

The session, which is delivered nationwide, focused on safeguarding and highlighted the vulnerabilities that could make someone susceptible to radicalisation.

Sixty people from a range of services across the council including housing, environmental health, planning as well as borough councilors, attended the training session.

Council chief executive, Donald Graham, said: "Everyone has a role to play in ensuring Hertsmere remains a safe place.

"Our workforce is in regular contact with members of the local community so it's important that we know the signs to look out for and how to raise concerns.

"This was a very useful session, which included some helpful case studies showing how a range of agencies can work together."

Detective Constable Emma Maxwell from the Hertfordshire Prevent Team was one of the facilitators. She said: "These training sessions form part of PREVENT, which is the UK's counter terrorism strategy.

"It's invaluable to have the opportunity to spend time with staff, who have such regular, day-to-day contact with members of the community."
