The big rebuild at Kings Langley Secondary School began this week as they welcomed project developer Interserve Kajima onto the site.

Plans for the school to undergo a major development were submitted to Dacorum Borough Council back in November 2013 to redevelop the existing secondary school, to increase its student capacity from 1,085 to 1,180 and to improve the quality of facilities at the school.

By October 2014, the plans reached their final stage.

The rebuild will include a multiuse games area (MUGA), with two full size football pitches, three tennis and netball courts, an under-14s football pitch and five cricket strips, and is expected to be finished in July 2016.

The school will also be getting a new drop-off zone to ease congestion on surrounding roads, with a new turning circle which has enough space for eight coaches, as well as a "state of the art" sports hall and a covered outdoor amphitheatre.

Kings Langley Secondary School is being rebuilt after the Education Funding Agency, who are procuring this work on behalf of the Department for Education, announced that the school would be one of eight to be rebuilt.

The design of Kings Langley Secondary School will be replicated across all the other school included in the rebuild project.

Diane Bell, business manager at Kings Langley School, said: "We are absolutely delighted to welcome Interserve Kajima onto our site this week to start the new school development. It is so exciting that after the last few years of planning our new school is now becoming a reality."

Initially, the developers will be completing "enabling work", which will include laying temporary car parking and setting up the contractors compound.

The MUGA will then be the developer's first priority as the current tennis courts will be decommissioned once this is up and running. The current tennis courts are directly in the footprint of the new building, so the school needs to have the new MUGA facility in place before they start the main building construction.
