A north Watford couple who met as teenagers on a work outing have celebrated 50 years of marriage.

John and Sue Denny, of Sussex Road, were married in 1965 in Edgware after meeting the year before through their place of work, London Cars.

Thankfully their relationship was able to overcome an immediate cultural divide as John, a rocker, and Sue, a mod, got together when conflict between the two youth groups was at its peak.

Last week the pair marked their golden wedding anniversary with a trip to Rye, in Sussex, and a large family meal.

John, 72, said the secret to a successful marriage is looking after each other and working through problems together.

He said: "We always watch out for each other and we’re always there for each other.

"We never go to bed on an argument and if we have a problem we work it through together.

"We have our own interests but we also like to do things together and go on holidays.

"We’ve been together all these years and I think we’re getting along alright."

In 1966 the couple set up home in Hagden Lane, Watford, and lived in several West Watford homes until moving to north Watford.

John worked for Scammell as a panel beater before moving to Rolls-Royce and lastly Asda.

Sue, 68, worked for the National Health Service as a psychiatric nurse and then became a social worker.

They have three children - two sons and a daughter - and are now proud grandparents-of-seven.

Now both retired, Sue enjoys walking her dogs and John can often be found playing bowls.
