Trading standards officers in Hertfordshire are reminding small and medium retailers that there’s just five weeks to go before they have to cover up their displays of tobacco.

In 2012 legislation was introduced to make it a requirement that large retailers stop displaying tobacco products to the public.

Now, from April 6, small and medium businesses must also comply and cover up displays of tobacco in shops, pubs, clubs and bars.

In-store displays will only be allowed to remain open for as long as is reasonable to serve a customer, complete stock control or restocking, staff training or appropriate cleaning and maintenance.

It is the retailer’s responsibility to ensure that the changes are made and they should be aware that non-compliance with the legislation is a criminal offence.
