A former Watford FC loanee, who was arrested yesterday on suspicion of having sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl, has been released on bail pending on-going investigations.

England and Sunderland AFC winger, Adam Johnson, was arrested at 9.15am from his home in Castle Eden, near Hartlepool, County Durham, yesterday.

The 27-year-old, who made 12 appearances for Watford whilst on loan from Middlesbrough, was later bailed by Durham Police.

Following the arrest, Sunderland AFC released a statement confirming that Johnson has been suspended from the club, pending the outcome of the police investigation.

Johnson had been due to travel with the squad for tonight's Premier League fixture against Hull.
