A 10-year-old girl from Bushey has been chosen to join Hertsmere Mayor, Councillor Carey Keates to raise the flag for Commonwealth Day.

Carmen Gonzalez-Aller, who attends Hartsbourne Primary School, was picked at random out of eight winning entries into a competition, which invited five to 11-year-olds to identify the 53 states in the Commonwealth on a map.

The competition was held to reflect this year's theme of A Young Commonwealth.

Monday, March 9 is the second Commonwealth Day and to mark the occasion, Hertsmere Borough Council will join councils across the UK and member states to raise flag to highlight the importance of the global partnership.

Mayor cllr Keates said: "This is a unique initiative which builds on the success of last year’s inaugural event. It’s great for Hertsmere and the UK to form part of this fabulous celebration of our amazing family of nations that encompasses the globe.

"Thank you to all the young people who entered our competition and well done to Carmen."

The event will take place at 10am, outside the civic offices in Borehamwood.
