On this day in south west Hertfordshire
In the last 12 months, 5,723 aliens registered in Hertfordshire. Of these, 1,135 were Italian, 1,025 Polish, 902 German, 362 Hungarian, 344 American and 259 Spanish.
Of the rest, there were 57 Russians (but only three from the USSR), ten Chinese, 25 Czechs, 22 Estonians and 180 Latvians.
Stateless people amounted to ten – and there were 89 people whose nationality is classified as uncertain.
