A 23-year-old from Bushey will be taking part in the London Marathon to raise money for a local diabetes charity.

Jordan Silver, of Prowse Avenue, Bushey Heath will be gearing up for the race for the second year running and the money he raises will go to the Michael Green Foundation.

Mr Silver, who also has type one diabetes, says he is doing this in memory of Michael Green.

The Michael Green Foundation is a charity that raises awareness of type two diabetes and money for the Watford General Michael Clements Diabetes Centre. It was set up by Joanne Green, in memory of her husband, who died in December 2012, after suffering from a silent heart attach - a complication of of having diabetes.

Mr Silver said: "Michael was a close family friend and it was a shock when he passed away.

"Last year I ran the London Marathon for a type one diabetes charity and this I thought it would be good to do it for this foundation. I want to show that having diabetes doesn't have to affect you at all and not should it stop you from doing the things you want to."

Mr Silver, who works as an estate agent, has raised roughly £1,500 so far.

He added: "I have lived with the condition since I was seven-years-old, and yes it is a shock when you first get diagnosed and it's not easy, but once you do have it under control you can pretty much lead a normal life.

"I currently train three to four times a week. Before a run I check my sugars - if it is low I drink some lucazade and I also always carry a bottle on me just in case, and when I get back I check my sugars again."

Since the charity started, they have raised more than £45,000 and have opened the Michael Green Dietetic Educational Kitchen at The Michael Clements Diabetes Centre in Watford General Hospital.

Charity founder, Ms Green, said: "Jordan is a role model to other young diabetics. He's 23-years-old and he has never let his condition stop him from what he wants to do - he's turned something that could easily have been a negative into something positive.

"I am very proud that someone like him is running in memory of Michael."

Mr Silver will be running the London Marathon on Sunday, April 26. To donate money visit: http://m.virginmoneygiving.com/mt/uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fundraiser-web/fundraiser/showFundraiserProfilePage.action?userUrl=JordanSilver&un_jtt_redirect.
