The national disability charity, Walsingham, is encouraging people it supports to attend a special event in Watford to find out more about voting in the General Election on May 7.

The “Make it Count” event will be held on April 1 at The Lemarie Centre, St Albans Road, Watford, and it is part of a series of four events that the charity has organised in the run up to the election.

The workshops will provide information to people who are supported by Walsingham about politics, why voting is important and the various ways to vote.

Walsingham Trustee Richard Keagan-Bull, who has a learning disability, has co-organised the events and will be presenting at two of the seminars.

He said: “More needs to be done to make information about politics and voting easy to understand for people with disabilities.

“We’re hoping that the events will raise awareness among people supported by Walsingham and answer any questions about how to vote.”

Paul Snell, Walsingham Chief Executive, said: “It’s shocking but some people we support were turned away from a polling station last election day and this simply isn’t acceptable.

“Everyone has the right to vote, regardless of any form of disability. The voting events and supporting information that we’re providing will aid people’s understanding of the election and their right to have their voices heard.”
