Lanchester Community Free School had its official opening this week with a tour of the building and representations from Watford dignitaries.

Helen Lockham, executive principle, spoke about the privilege of continuing the educational purpose of the building.

Ms Lockham noted that being close to the centre of Watford "is an advantage" with easy access to the library, shops and Cassiobury Park for nature and science trips.

She said: "We focus on a value each week. The most recent focus has been hope.

"We want our children to learn through values to grow up into wonderful citizens, and we'll give them the skills to do this.

"As a free school and a new school, we have the opportunity to be innovative and have installed Information Technology throughout the school including computers, iPads and large screens for learning."

She added that the school's focus is on science, technology and sport.

Pupils at the school sang the assembly song, Power In Me, at the end of the opening.

Watford MP Richard Harrington and Elected Mayor Dorothy Thornhill attended and Lord Salisbury, chancellor of the University of Hertfordshire, unveiled the plaque.

Lord Salisbury spoke about benefits of community supporting schools and education.

He said: "What you have in name is an important factor - the name 'community' and the idea that the community can lead in transformation of education."
