A smoke alarm saved the life of a mother and her son after their kitchen caught on fire.
Firefighters were called to a house in Magnolia Avenue, Abbots Langley, at 2.06am yesterday.
The two occupants of the house had been woken by the sound of their smoke alarm.
They made a quick exit, and were outside the property when firefighters arrived.
Crews from Garston, and Watford attended the blaze, which was extinguished by 2.31am.
Firefighter Russell Ward said the incident emphasised the importance of having working smoke alarms.
He said: "The woman in the house acted in the correct way. She closed off all the doors, which prevented the fire spreading and limited the damage caused by the fire."
