Just weeks away from the Parliamentary election, residents in Kings Langley were given the opportunity to put their election candidates in the hot seat at a hustings event on Thursday.

The event was organised by Churches Together and was held at Christ Church Baptist in The Nap, with all six Hemel Hempstead candidates present - Mile Penning for Conservative, Alan Edmund Borgars for Green, Tony Breslin for Labour, Rabi Martins for Liberal Democrats, Howard Koch for UK Independent Party (UKIP) and Brian Hall for Independent.

The Kings Langley hustings followed on from a similar event the night before in Hemel Hempstead.

Harold Taylor, who took charge of promotion for the event, commented on the great turn out at the event, particularly from Kings Langley residents, and explained why a separate event was organised to happen in Kings Langley.

"The first thing is we are very pleased with the turn out at the event, and it was great to see so many people from Kings Langley present - lots of publicity for the event beforehand contributed to the successful turn out," said Mr Taylor.

"Kings Langley is a distinct entity. It’s a community of its own with individual village character tenaciously preserved.

"We don’t want to be regarded as a nothing to Hemel Hempstead, which is why it was good to see a separate event happen in Kings Langley."

The question and answer debate was lead by Derek McLean of Christ Church Baptist and Chris Pettit was in charge of acoustics and recording the event.

The debate began with an introduction from each of the candidates and their links to the area, and this was swiftly followed by questions from the floor.

The first question by members of the audience asked whether candidates thought Hemel Hempstead should have a fully functioning hospital.

This was followed by politicians’ thoughts on protecting the Green Belt and reducing carbon emissions in the Kings Langley area, before country-wide matters, such as first-past-the-post voting, EU membership and the Right to Buy scheme.

Mr Taylor added: "The evening went very well and everybody had a fair chance to express their point of view.

"Everybody who attended enjoyed themselves, which was evident from the applause at the end."
