The Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport joined Watford's Conservative parliamentary candidate in Abbots Langley yesterday.

There to help with Richard Harrington’s campaign, Conservative government minister Sajid Javid was on hand to meet Mr Harrington’s constituents and answer any questions about the Conservatives plans.

Speaking to passers-by on the High Street, and later joining a tea and cake session in Henderson Hall, the two spoke of what they hoped to achieve in Abbots Langley today, what the village residents can expect to see with a Conservative win, and Mr Harrington’s chances of winning the seat.

Mr Harrington stressed that among other politicians, Abbots Langley is very much a forgotten part of the constituency, because people forget that it is a part of Watford.

"So I come here every month and you find out what matters to people," Mr Harrington said.

"The concerns of people locally here are schools for their children, because a lot people have young children here, so education is a top priority.

"Now that Watford Junction is being linked up to the Met line under the Croxley Rail link, the next thing is linking Watford to Crossrail, so people will be able to go by train from Kings Langley all the way through to Central London in 20 minutes – bring the infrastructure up to date.

"Those are the two most important things."

Mr Javid said: "So far, everyone I’ve met today, and when I’ve been with Richard in the past, the first thing they all say is he works really hard, he understands the community and won’t give up until he gets what he wants for the local community.

"The second thing that local people are looking for is the national policies. Up and most is the strength of the economy that Conservatives have achieved. This is something that people recognise.

"For example, local unemployment is down by over 50 per cent in the last five years. That’s one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country.

"Despite that, Richard keeps holding annual job fairs, which shows that he doesn’t give up.

"I think Richard’s chances are very strong for those two reasons."
