A member of the group opposing the proposed 120 home development in Abbots Langley is displaying a banner across his house with regards to how he feels residents have been treated.

Paul Johnson, a resident of Orchard Avenue and member of the Woodside Action Group put up the banner two weeks ago, reading 'Why did Lib-Dems allow building on Green Belt without consultation?'

Plans for the housing development in land off Woodside Road were produced by Taylor Wimpey in September last year, and residents who will be affected by the development have since been fighting against the plans they deem "inappropriate and not needed".

The group are unhappy with a number of aspects of the plans, particularly the decision-making process, and a decision by Three Rivers District Council to remove the site's Green Belt status in November 2014.

Residents felt Liberal Democrat councillors had "misled" them after they had previously opposed the plans.

In response to this and the banner, Liberal Democrat and Abbots Langley Parish Councillor Sara Bedford said: "Local councillors worked for several years to ensure that the Woodside Road site was not included in the draft Local Plan.

"Unfortunately the Country Council supported the inclusion of the site for housing, as the developers had promised them a free school site on neighbouring land.

"The planning inspector put the site into the Local Plan and removed the site from the Green Belt. It was unanimously agreed by all councillors and all parties that there was no prospect of success to challenge the Local Plan and that it should be accepted.

"If we had tried to appeal the Plan, every field in Three Rivers would have been unprotected for up to three years and the council would have had to build a greater number of homes.

"Not only would the Woodside Road site have been built upon, but every other open field in the district would have become available for development."

The Woodside Action Group meet every week to continue their campaign and are currently looking to seek help from Westminster.
