An Aldenham pub celebrated the 70th anniversary of VE Day by hosting a fun day at the weekend.

The Three Compasses in Pegmire Lane, Patchetts Green, organised the event in association with the Army Benevolent fund.

Bagpippers and soldiers from the London regiment marched on to the green at noon on Saturday, and this marked the start of the fun-filled event.

The soldiers set up an assault course for people to take part in. They also had a stall with weapons on display.

The day also included organised tug o-war, face painting, live music and a local resident talking about Aldenham during the 1940s.

Pub owner Jason Keen said: "It was fabulous and really well received by the community.

"The weather wasn't great but it was still brilliant and people had a lot of fun. The staff and customers of the pub had a tug 'war match against the soldiers and we won - although my arms are still aching from it.

"The highlight of the day was the sing-a-long. We had a pianist from Kings Langley come down and play a lot of old World War II songs and everyone joined in and sang along."

The event raised around £300 for the Army Benevolent fund. A collection of another £300 was also made for the Nepal Earthquake Appeal.

Mr Keen added: "This was the first real event we have held since taking over the pub in January. It was so well supported by the residents that we are now encouraged to do more events for the community in the future."
