An award winning poet visited students at the Watford University Technical College to give a presentation of his work.

Simon Armitage's visit followed the Watford UTC’s Year 10 students’ trip to Poetry Live in December 2014 - a series of annual events for GCSE students at venues across the UK.

At this event, Mr Armitage performed his Clown Punk poem which was inspired by a punk the poet used to see in his home town.

Emma Loveland, principal of the Watford UTC, said: "Alongside our dedication to our computer science, travel and tourism, hospitality and event management specialisms, we also want to offer students an enriching and inspiring literacy and cultural experience.

"Our students really engaged with Simon and this was a great way to promote the enjoyment of reading and writing for pleasure."

Students were supplied with individualised notebooks in which to record two reasons to be cheerful each day, linking Simon’s Clown Punk poem to the punk rock singer Ian Dury’s song of the same title.

The UTC has a series of Information Events planned for students wishing to find out more about the college. For more information, visit www.watfordutc.org.
