Members of the Watford Floral Society have won a gold medal at Chelsea Flower Show for a "wow-factor" pedestal arrangement.

Stanborough Park Church's flower arranger Audrey Balderstone, along with her friend and colleague Geoff Fox were presented with the award in London.

Audrey, who is also president of Watford Floral Society, created the winning arrangement in a joint effort with Geoff, chairman of the society.

Audrey said: "Still in shock but so thrilled. I'm feeling very overwhelmed and emotional."

To win a gold the arrangement has to fulfil 16 criteria, including horticultural excellence, knowledgeable portrayal of the title, excellent scale, proportion, rhythm and balance - and have the "wow-factor".

Audrey said: "I was not sure that a pedestal would provide that, so I was totally thrilled an amazed to get a gold."

She continued: "We have been planning the exhibit since March. The title of our class was Heritage and I knew immediately that I wanted to do a pedestal as it is my favourite from doing flowers in church.

"We thought of doing a tribute to people like Constance Spry and Julia Clements who were the pioneers of flower arranging but eventually decided we might be restricted to their style so decided on 'Our Heritage from National Association of Flower Arranger Societies - the love of flowers and foliage arranged to delight the senses'.

"We worked all night but it was a wonderful experience with lovely people all around us doing marvellous work."
