A 13-year-old boy was taken to hospital after a "horrific" collision in Rickmansworth on Sunday.

Emergency services were called to Uxbridge Road on Sunday afternoon after an accident involving a 13-year-old boy and a Fiat 500.

One witness said the boy went on to the bonnet of the car, before he then "slid off" on to the ground.

Though there was no suggestion that the driver was speeding, traders in Uxbridge Road say cars regularly travel along the road at speeds of "50 to 60 mph".

The driver, who "was a young girl" was said to be in shock according to a witness of the crash.

Gayle Partington, of Uxbridge Road, said: "It all happened so fast. He ran across the road and was hit by a car.

"He went onto the bonnet, then slid off onto the ground.

"It was horrific. There were quite a few people around and two adults were on their phones contacting the emergency services.

"He kept saying sorry, sorry, sorry to the girl.

"He appeared OK but obviously needed to be checked over".

The resident, who lives yards from where the accident happened, went on to say there were a number of parked cars on the road heading towards Moneyhill and the young boy "apparently did not see" the car coming.

She added: "The council or highways should do something to slow the traffic down there by Fairways garage as someone has already been killed on this stretch of road.

"I did ask years ago, but was told it is not suitable for a zebra crossing but surely something can be done before another tragic accident happens?"

Hollie Cowan, spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service, said he was taken to Watford General Hospital for further care.

Kaytie Blackett, owner of White Rose Floral Design, believes something needs to be done to reduce the speed of traffic and suggested speed camera could be introduced.

She said: "They definitely drive too fast here. I have been here about 10 months and during that time I have definitely seen cars driving too fast.

"I have witnessed one and I think it was a customer from the barber. He reversed out and a car hit him. I have heard there have been another few accidents.

"Once every few days there will be cars doing excessive speeds in excess of 50mph and 60mph."

Another employee at a nearby shop, who asked not to named, said: "There will be a bad accident one day.

"Cars fly along here from the Moneyhill Parade down to the BP garage and someone only has to pull out of the garage and there will be a bad accident."
