A woman "trapped" in her home after a horror illness left her wheelchair bound has slammed councils for the way they have handled her plea to be rehoused.

Kristyanne Martin, of Sparrows Herne, Bushey, applied to Hertsmere Borough Council and Watford Borough Council to be rehoused as her current accommodation is no longer suitable.

The 30-year-old recently suffered from a full kidney failure, which led to nerve damage that paralysed her left leg. She also suffered from other numerous health issues afterwards including Crohns and malnutrition, brought on from months of not eating due being in and out of consiousness.

Ms Martin, who is originally from Watford, said: "My current home is not suitable to live in, in a lot of ways.

"I am isolated from people because I am trapped in my home - I am unable to go out on my own because I can't get in and out of my house without my partner.

"I think this is outrageous. Both Watford and Hertsmere said I don't meet their criteria."

The mother of two said she has a lot of local connections in Watford but they don't take that into account any more. However, in Hertsmere not only do you have to have local connections, you need to have worked or lived in the area for five years.

Ms Martin, who only sees her children at the weekends when she feels strong enough, has lived in Bushey for three years.

She added: "All I am asking for is a review from both councils.

"Currently, the doorways in my property are not wide enough for my wheelchair to go through so I am normally confined to the bedroom. The units in the kitchen are not accessible and I am unable to go to the bathroom alone, which even with help is a big struggle.

"I want to live in a house, which doesn't restrict my health or independence."

Watford Borough Council said that because Ms Martin lives in Bushey it is Hertsmere's duty to rehouse her.

Spokesperson for Hertsmere, Cath Shepherd said: "Ms Martin made an application to us on the May 5 and we are processing it. She does not meet our ‘local connection’ criteria, but we will be considering this case as exceptional circumstances once we have reviewed all the relevant medical information.

"She did receive a letter based on her original application advising her she did not meet our criteria as there was no medical information on her form. Now we are aware of it we are reviewing that decision."
