Two people have been taken to hospital after a serious car crash in Carpenders Park.

Emergency services raced to Oxhey Lane, at the junction with Highfield, after a collision between two vehicles just after 4.10pm.

One person was trapped after the smash and firefighters had to cut the driver out of their car.

The trapped driver was then flown to hospital with serious injuries, according to the police.

Oxhey Lane has been closed after the accident and police are saying it is likely to be closed for a "number of hours".

One neighbour, whose property backs on to the road, said: "I heard an extended car horn which abruptly stopped, followed by what sounded like a thump at which point I felt the house shake a little.

"About 10 minutes later I heard a lot of emergency vehicles stopping just behind the garden.

"I climbed my fence and had a look to see a line of traffic and various emergency vehicles including an unmarked police car.

"15-20 minutes after this I heard and saw an air ambulance circling over the trees and I assume it landed on a nearby field."

Nicola Lawrence, spokesman for Hertfordshire Constabulary, said: "Road closures have been put in place on Carpenders Lanes at the junction with Oxhey Lane and on Oxhey Lane at the junction with Little Oxhey Lane.

"Traffic is being diverted through Carpenders Park.

"These road closures are expected to remain in place for at least the next couple of hours while emergency services and a police road crash investigation team attend to the scene".

Tom Shipp, spokesman for Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue, confirmed another woman had got out of their vehicle after the crash. She was driven to hospital.

The fire service used hydraulic cutting equipment to release the trapped person from their vehicle.
