More than a hundred people signed up to Neighbourhood Watch this weekend during a police Safer Streets event.

On Sunday, officers from the Safer Neighbourhood Team knocked on more than 740 doors in Stanborough ward.

During the day 103 people signed up to Neighbourhood Watch, a scheme which has proved effective in helping to reduce crime.

The scheme also allows people to receive messages from police about crimes affecting the area and work being done to address it.

In addition, 151 people requested a free Home Fire Safety Check from Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service and 20 people were identified as vulnerable and will be referred to get additional security measures in their home.

As part of the Safer Streets campaign, officers from the Safer Neighbourhood Team, police cadets and special constables visit a different area of the town each month to speak to residents and offer them the opportunity to raise issues of concerns about crime and anti-social behaviour in their area.

Neighbourhood Inspector for Watford, Nick Lillitou, said: "Since Safer Streets was launched in 2013, we have visited over 11,000 properties and signed up 2,593 to Neighbourhood Watch.

"It’s also a great opportunity for us to offer essential crime prevention advice and listen to the concerns of residents. If they raise issues, such as anti-social behaviour or we feel they may be vulnerable to crime and need extra support, then we will take that forward."
