A national campaign to get more people cycling for fun and fitness is returning to Watford this summer.

Sky Ride Local will offer a range of themed guided bike rides taking place across the county.

Rides in Watford start on Sunday, June 14, with a 20-mile ride at 10am and a five-mile ride at 2pm from Watford Cycle Hub in the King George V Playing Fields.

The shorter ride is for all ages, but the longer one is those aged eight and older, and children aged up to 15 should be accompanied by an adult.

The rides, which range from easygoing pootles to more challenging leg-stretchers, are intended to help Watford people discover more of their area - from quiet canal towpaths to secret urban routes, exploring everything from historic sites to the best local coffee shops.

Stewart Kellett, British Cycling’s director of Recreation and Partnerships, said: "What better way to get some exercise, get outdoors and see your area in a new way than to join some of the themed Sky Ride Local bike rides taking place in and around Watford this summer.

"The rides are beginning this weekend and run every weekend throughout the summer, so there’s no time like the present to get your bike out. Whether you want to build your cycling confidence or are already comfortable on a bike and looking for a challenge, now’s the time to register your free place on a Sky Ride Local bike ride in Watford."

Elected Mayor of Watford Dorothy Thornhill said: "Cycling is on the increase in Watford – all good for family fun and individual fitness. Sky Rides are a popular way to join others, increase your confidence and have fun. It’s free and suits all abilities."
