A benefit claimant who failed to tell Watford Borough Council that she was working has been brought to justice.

Vanessa John-Baptiste appeared before Watford Magistrates Court on Friday, June 5.

The court heard that the 46-year-old was overpaid £762.31 between July 8, 2013, and March 7, 2014.

During that period she continued claiming the Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit given to her initially because of her low income.

John-Baptiste, of Water Lane, Watford, was fined £37, and ordered to pay £200 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.

She will now have to pay back all the cash that was overpaid to her.

Garry Turner, fraud manager at Watford Borough Council, said: "Benefits are there to help the poorest in our society.

"People who commit benefit fraud are stealing from the taxpayer and we will not tolerate it. John-Baptiste is one of many who thought they could abuse the system and get away with it – only to be caught and prosecuted by Watford Borough Council.

"We will now be getting all of the taxpayer’s money back from her. To confidentially report someone who is committing benefit fraud in Watford, phone 0800 458 9200, email fraud@watford.gov.uk, or visit www.watford.gov.uk."
