More than 300 runners took part in the Kings Langley Puffaten road races at the weekend.

The event, hosted by Kings Langley Primary School in Common Lane, took place on Sunday, June 14 and while Hemel Hempstead MP Mike Penning attended to start the 1.5k, 3k and 10k races and give out medals at the end, Princess Leia and Darth Vader warmed up the younger runners before the two fun runs.

Alan Johnson, race director, said: The weather was disappointing, but the children had a great time without the teachers calling them back to class.

"For the adults there was the BBQ, the music and the opportunity to catch up with friends.

"In its present incarnation the event is in its second year, although the original Puffa events were started nearly 30 years ago by local postman John Cherry.

"Sadly John died a few weeks before this year’s event, but his legacy is so many people being a great deal fitter and healthier as a result of his endeavours.

"With over 30 trophies it felt like everyone was a winner this year.

"The conditions ensured there were no new records, apart from the first female in the 1.5k event where Jessica Chadwick knocked over a minute off her winning time last year.

"In the 10k event Paul Allen and Joanne Squires led the field, with vets Andy Smith and Claire Randle in close attendance.

"In the 3k event, Rocco Bowes and Timmy Gower were first home in their respective categories, with Eloise Dickins and Jessica in the girls’ event.

"In the 1.5k it was Billy Hoar and Isla Hancock who were back at the finish almost before anyone had time to draw breath."

At the end of the event, Mr Penning paid tribute to the race officials and sponsors.

He said: "They do a great job in supporting these events and making sure that the village benefits. It also means that we can look forward to this being a regular in the calendar.

"Next year I know the senior school want to be more involved and I’m sure we will have an even bigger turnout for the Puffaten on June, 12 2016. I hope everyone has the date in their diary."
