A trust has showcased its plans to redevelop the Meriden estate.

More than 120 residents attended Watford Community Housing Trust’s exhibition to view and comment on its plans to build 141 homes, a new shopping area and revamped community areas.

Euan Barr, head of new business at the trust, said: "For 18 months, we have been talking to residents about regenerating the Meriden, and their ideas have shaped the proposals we have displayed.

"The lively and positive atmosphere at this event, together with the great turnout, shows how strongly people feel about the area."

But Stephen Moss of the Friends of Meriden group said residents fear the trust is trying to squeeze too much in to a small space.

He said: "I went along and the architect has been very good and taken some of our comment in to account.

"But the trust is still trying to get an awful lot in a tiny space and this is just the first phase. The estate was designed with green spaces, we like the way it was with built.

"We accept there will be some change - we need a new shopping area, as it’s a bit tired, and some additional houses but what they are trying to squeeze in is going to make the estate so tight.

"We are going to call a large public meeting in due course and find out exactly what it is the vast majority of people here want."
