A 30-day amnesty which allowed residents not living in their council home or illegally subletting to hand back their keys has been judged a great success, with seven keys recovered.

The campaign, which ended on Tuesday 30 June 2015, also prompted more than 100 calls to a dedicated hotline and possible legal action against those who contravened the rules.

The amnesty initiative was launched in response to a change in the law, the Prevention of Social Housing Fraud Act 2013, which makes it illegal to sublet council properties. Offenders could face a prison sentence of up to two years, a fine of up to £5,000 and a criminal record.
