Sixth-form pupils at Rickmansworth School witnessed their friends being rescued from an accident scene during a road awareness event on Tuesday.

Students from the Scots Hill school watched a fire crew rescue two actors who pretended to be injured after an accident as part of the school's road awareness day on Tuesday, July 7.

Fire crews cut the car open in front of  students and rescued them.

The event was set up to encourage students to be safe while on the road and firefighters told students that a third of drivers are involved in a crash before their 25 birthday.

Beth Dean, a year 12 student at the school, said: “Overall the whole experience was largely sobering and it seems all the students, myself included, have come away from it more cautious than when we went in and having such a direct experience has left a profound and hopefully permanent effect on us all.”

Firefighters also gave a talk about road safety and the head of sixth form hopes it will make students "think twice before they get into a car".

Head of Sixth Form, Mrs Wilkes said: “Road death is the biggest killer of young people and we just want our students to think twice before they get into a car, whether behind the wheel or as a passenger, so they keep each other safe.”
