Two men have been arrested for a number of offences after dogs from the district’s Dog Unit were called to assist officers.

The men have been arrested on suspicion of taking a vehicle without its owner’s consent, possession of a controlled drug with the intent to supply and other offences in Watford.

At around 11.30pm on Tuesday, July 21, two people were seen to run away from a Ford Focus that was left insecure in Prince Street after officers passed it earlier and turned around to speak with the occupants.

To assist with locating the two people, police dog Wolf and his handler, PC Darren Smith, were sent to the area.

At approximately 12.30am, two men were detained and subsequently arrested.

After Wolf’s role was complete, Darren’s other dog, yellow Labrador Police Dog Boomer, was called into action. This time it was Boomer’s nose put to the test and he searched the area around the car.

A quantity of money and items suspected to be controlled drugs were located by Boomer and seized by officers.

Sergeant Vicky Stoughton from the Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Dog Unit said: "Our handlers work in perfect partnership with their canine counterparts.

"The training they undertake makes them ideally suited to assist officers with various tasks and numerous incidents around the three counties."
