Watford Mencap has launched a gardening project at its new allotment in Croxley Green.

The charity took over the plot in May this year and have just harvested our first crop of beetroot.

In addition, to learning about horticulture, the group have also used the allotment to undertake craft activities including making a scarecrow who now lives on the allotment.

The scarecrow had its first appearance at the Barton Way Allotment Association (BWAA) Open Day where a competition was held to choose a name - he's now called “Patch”.

Project leader Lata Rees said “I am really pleased with everyone's collective effort to get this project off to a good start and am very grateful to BWAA for welcoming us to join their community.

"Thank you to all the people who have kindly made donations of tools which will be very useful.”

For further information about the project contact Lata on 07901 914154.

Additionally, now that the contestants for the next BBC Great British Bake Off have been announced, Watford Mencap wants residents to hold their own baking competitions.

Organisers said it's a simple, fun and tasty way to raise funds for the charity with friends or work colleagues.
