Children got an insight into what it takes to be an engineer and the work they do at an open day hosted at the Building Research Establishment in Watford.

Co-hosted by the Institution of Engineering and Technology, the Engineering Open House Day also aimed to inspire a new generation of engineers by showcasing career opportunities in the industry open to young people.

Apple-Jane Hayward, one of the children taking part in Friday’s event, said: “I’ve had an amazing time today, learning all about how science and engineering can make buildings more environmentally friendly. I enjoy chemistry and testing things to find out how they work so it has been really interesting.”

Helen Pineo, associate director at BRE, added: “We enjoyed meeting parents and young people who are interested in the work our engineers do here – they are integral to our business and we would encourage any young person interested in a career as an engineer to pursue it.”
